What is a CDL?
A CDL or “Commercial Driver License,” is a license which allows its holder to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV.) A CMV is a motor vehicle used in commerce to transport passengers or property with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or a gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds or more, including a towed unit with a gross weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more.
Are you qualified to drive a CMV and obtain your CDL?
- You need to hold a regular driver license (Class D) for a minimum of one (1) year.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- You need a Department of Transportation Medical Certificate (DOT card.)
- Complete the Utah self certification form when you apply for the CDL.
There are two government agencies that make up the policies for CDL holders:
- FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), the Federal agency that makes the majority of the rules; and
- Utah also has some rules that come into play. Keep in mind that the State of Utah can make requirements stricter than FMCSA rules, but cannot make them less.
