This panel will be moderated by Dean Gordon Smith, Dean and Woodruff J. Deem Professor of Law of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. As a scholar, Dean Smith is a leading figure in the field of law and entrepreneurship and has done foundational work on fiduciary theory. For his work in promoting the study of corpus linguistics and design thinking in law schools (including co-founding LawX, BYU’s legal design clinic), Dean Smith was included in the 2017 class of Fastcase 50, which honors “the law’s smartest, most courageous innovators, techies, visionaries, & leaders.” Serving as the head of BYU Law since 2016, Dean Smith has established the Inspiring Leadership Initiative and supported the creation and development of BYU Law’s Refugee and Immigration Initiative and the Community Law Clinic. At the invitation of the Utah Supreme Court, Dean Smith has been part of an effort to narrow the access-to-justice gap in Utah by proposing the establishment of the Utah Office of Legal Services Innovation to oversee nontraditional legal services and providers. Dean Smith also advocated for recent law school graduates before the Utah Supreme Court, which granted the diploma privilege in April 2020, providing a spur to the national debate over law licensure. Dean Smith earned a JD from the University of Chicago Law School and a BS in Accounting from Brigham Young University. Before entering academe, Professor Smith clerked for Judge W. Eugene Davis in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and was an associate in the Delaware office of the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Estate Guru: Jonathan Hansen-Chichoni is the CEO of Estate Guru, a digital estate planning company focused on scaling competent representation in the estate planning process. Prior to his work with Estate Guru, he held various positions in the financial services industry. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Global Supply Chain receiving university honors. He enjoys skiing, golfing and creating pathways for access to justice!

Hello Divorce: Erin Levine is a legal innovator, entrepreneur, and Certified Family Law Specialist. She is the CEO and Founder of Hello Divorce, an award winning online platform that helps self-represented folks navigate the divorce process on their own through a revolutionary web platform, accessing legal help when they need additional help along the way.  As a young adult, she brought criminal and civil charges against a former gymnastics coach, and experienced the legal system as chaotic, confusing, and amplifying her trauma rather than bringing justice. She later became a divorce litigator. Despite her success as a law firm owner, she realized there must be a better way and pivoted into justice-technology. Erin works relentlessly to simplify family law, reduce trauma for those seeking relief from the court and help people get back on their feet. Her design centered and sustainable approach to the delivery of legal services has been recognized by the legal industry and beyond with recent accomplishments that include the American Bar Association‘s James I. Keane Memorial Award for Excellence in E-lawyering and Duke University School of Law’s Legal Tech Accelerator – Grand Prize. Erin’s current projects include raising her two daughters, Zoe and Mia, along with managing the national roll out of Hello Divorce’s products and services.

LawGeex: Amber Bass is a licensed attorney that brings more than 18 years of legal industry experience to LawGeex as the Head of US Legal Operations where she established the US delivery team in Lehi, UT in April 2020. The team has grown rapidly from a group of 5 to a current group of 20 attorneys and non-attorneys. Amber also develops the processes for LawGeex’s new services. Before joining LawGeex, Amber was the Vice President of Contracts, Compliance, and Commercial Services at an LPO. There, she was the interface to multiple clients and had been responsible for operations, strategy, P&L and client satisfaction. During her career in Legal Operations, Amber has established, maintained and transitioned various end to end contract review processes and metrics for leading global firms and Fortune 500 companies. This work involved managing global Contracts teams, refreshing client templates & policies, establishing process and legal playbooks, training client teams and internal teams in drafting, redlining & negotiating various contracts, providing regulatory compliance and risk identification/mitigation. Most notably was the complete transformation of the contracts department for a large, global pharmaceutical company; such transformation included software implementation, data migration, and process re-engineering. Prior to Amber’s Legal Operations work, Amber served as a Senior Contract Negotiator for such companies as IBM, Fidelity Investments, and on Boeing’s B-1 Bomber program.
